7/22/2023 0 Comments Dreamfall chapters books![]() Breaks from action, shows of strength and a divergence from characters who have to be tough, emotionless and one-dimensional in order to be strong and heroic. I hope that we see more of this in videogames going forward. Moments like this are what make me love Dreamfall and The Longest Journey. Ragnar Tornquist does an excellent job in his storytelling, using his characters and their relationships to each other and to the world to bring it all to life. This is why I love storytelling in videogames, there are less restrictions and developers can often do things any way they can imagine. Most people tend to not associate videogames with exceptional storytelling and vibrant characters, but there are many distinct examples where writers are able to do more than they could in any other medium in terms of telling their story. It gives a clearer picture of why this man might be so rough on the exterior. We see why he might hold things so close and not really open up to anyone. Two characters who have to be strong, reserved and who people look to to make hard decisions that others wouldn’t finally get a rest, and a little (b)romance.Įven Likho opens up, we see that he too is gay, but unlike Kian he has had to hide it. There is the chance for the two to make peace, which grants a nice change in pace for them. The perfect time for more heart-felt conversation and bonding. In Book 4 (if Kian took Likho with him) we pick up with them, after two long days in the cargo hold of an airship. Where Likho is from (which echos our own society in this regard) people apparently don’t understand this simple fact, but for Kian it (he) just is. This just isn’t an issue for him or his people. In this brief scene, we get a glimpse into this other side of Kian, which with integrity and simplicity explains a pretty simple but contentious point. He’s been struggling with his conscience we haven’t seen much of his heart. Up to this point his story has been about his duty, his honour and his faith (and loss there of). Kian (and Likho) is a very stoic character. There is more to it, but there’s the basic point. Likho asks him how he “deals” with being the way he is, this is what Kian has to say: He says he has no interest in women “in that way” when asked about the “mystery woman” he has been meeting with, and then in a rooftop scene where he and Likho (he’s the blue one in case you haven’t played the game) are standing watch, Kian finally opens up more. It is hinted at throughout Books 1 and 2, but in Book 3 it is stated that Kian is gay. I had been replaying Dreamfall Chapters Books 1-3 in anticipation of the release of Book 4 ( out now!) I have a better grasp of the whole story, and this time around something about Kian’s character stood out to me–maybe because of some choices I made differently, or just because of the timely nature of my hearing. One is The Witcher 3 (which I will write about soon) and another is Dreamfall Chapters. There have been a few games recently that have surprised me with their honest and different way of dealing with popular social issues. ![]() **MINOR SPOILERS FOR KIAN AND LIKHO IN BOOKS 3 AND 4.
